Taekwondo is about so much more than winning and losing. But with the State Tournament coming up this weekend, it got us thinking, what does it take to be a winner? What do those Martial Artists have that puts them on top, and allows them to win over all other competitors? The answer lies in the heart and minds of the winners. The truth of the matter is that they want it most and are willing to put in the work to get there.
At Venture Martial Arts, we teach nine life skills to every single student. Those are attitude, respect, confidence, perseverance, discipline, integrity, goals, focus, and discipline. When competing at tournaments, students have to talk all of those skills with them and use them no matter the outcome. But the students that end up winning are the ones that truly embrace those life skills.
They are disciplined. They show up to every class and train outside of karate lessons. They use every second of training time to improve their skills and take every opportunity to learn and grow. Even when they don’t feel like doing it, when they are sore or tired, they show up anyways. They have goals they what to achieve and won’t give up until they accomplish them.
They are focused. They have their mind set on what they want. They have their eyes on the prize. Doubt does not get them down, they know what they are capable of. They are masters of their minds and confident in their abilities. Their attitude remains positive through the ups and downs because they know there will always be highs and lows in life. Nothing is accomplished with a bad attitude so they stay positive.
They are respectful. Their parents, friends, teachers, and instructors love working with them because they show respect to everyone that they meet. They wear their heart on their sleeve and are kind and compassionate to everyone they meet. They show integrity by always doing the right thing, and showing up for the things and people they care about. They love Martial Arts training with all of their heart and it shows in everything that they do.
A true winner has a focused mind and a sound heart. They are true to their values and work hard to accomplish their goals. They use the nine life skills in everything that they do. With all of that together, they become better at taekwondo and eventually become champions.
Students of the National Martial Arts Alliance have the chance to compete for the State Championship title. The State Tournament will be held this Saturday, June 11th at Venture Martial Arts in Central Park. Both Venture locations have several students competing. We hope to win some titles!
